Love is 3/4s the Battle

This week I had the opportunity to spend time at my host school and met the teachers and staff.  I can honestly say how blessed and fortunate I feel to be placed where I am.  During the staff retreat we discussed outcomes, data, and the progress made over the last year.  What stood out to me the most was the genuine love and concern for the children.  I could feel it in every conversation and in every encounter I had.

Much of the success we achieve as administrators will depend upon who we have on the bus.
Getting the right people on the bus and the wrong people off.  This is not a new concept, I first read it in a book by Jim Collins called Good to Great about 15 years ago, it’s not a novel idea but it rings true.  In all of the organizations that I have been a part of over the years, the most effective, most successful, have been those that are truly committed to the cause.

In a school setting, I can work with a teacher that may not be as proficient or highly skilled as I would like, or someone that may not have the smoothest delivery.  What I can’t work with is someone that does not have a heart for children.  So as a school administrator no matter the opposition, union, or otherwise, my first priority after assessing the situation, is to figure out a way to kick those people off my bus.
